Graphic Novel
Kinney, J. (2008). Diary of a wimpy kid: Rodrick rules. New York: Amulet.
Summary:
In this sequel, the narrator Greg chronicles the daily life of a ‘wimpy kid’ who deals with issues from bullies, family, and school. Exhibiting both positive and negative traits, Greg is a likable guy and uses drawings to add context to his stories or to illustrate a point. His best friend, Rowley, is portrayed as none too bright and often falls for Greg’s schemes, which end up backfiring.
Target age and audience: 7th – 9th grade students.
Likes:
Greg’s entertaining writing style and laughable neuroses will keep many readers hooked throughout this five-volume series. His drawings are simplistic but either provide additional detail or his version of events. His successes in life are minor but are a big deal to him – such as bringing over a violent video game in a children’s CD case so that Rowley’s father will approve. He always seems to be mixed up in mistaken identities or convoluted schemes and things never turn out how he expects.
